16 Ways To Ensure Your Loved Ones' Safety

There is a group of people who have gone before us, paving the way in so many respects, by way of:
  1. Wisdom
  2. Courage
  3. Sacrifice
  4. Generosity
  5. Character
  6. Kindness
  7. Loyalty
  8. Example
Whether it was a parent, grandparent, favorite aunt or uncle, or long time friend, we have all been influenced by someone by an older generation, whose lives have touched and influenced ours in significant ways.  As you read these words, there is at least one person who comes to mind, someone who spent most of their life giving and serving those around them, and now, they face their own need to be cared for.

There are countless seniors and elderly people around us, and the great news is that the average life expectancy has increased, and many elderly have decided not to let age dictate the enjoyment of their lives.  They continue to keep themselves busy with grandchildren, travel, gardening, physical fitness, and so much more.

But as they grow older, we watch them face challenges of a different kind.  They are no longer concerned with going to work, running a business, or planning for retirement.  The challenges  they face are of a different nature:  protecting themselves from being a victim of financial fraud, regular screening of health issues, and personal physical safety.

Safety Tips For the Seniors and Elderly in Your Life

We found a great list of safety advice for those you know are at-risk for crime or accidental injuries.  It would be a great idea for you to post this somewhere in your loved one's home or to use as a checklist when helping to create safety for a loved one who is elderly.

BE ALERT WHEN OUT AND ABOUT
  • Go with friends or family, not alone.
  • Carry your purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.
  • Don't carry credit cards you don't need or large amounts of cash.
  • Use direct deposit for Social Security and other regular checks.
  • Whether you're a passenger or driver, keep car doors locked. Be particularly alert in parking lots and garages. Park near an entrance.
  • Sit close to the driver or near the exit while riding the bus, train, or subway.
  • If someone or something makes you uneasy, trust your instincts and leave.
MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE AND SECURE
  • Install good locks on doors and windows. Use them! Don't hide keys in mailboxes and planters or under doormats. Instead, leave an extra set of keys with a neighbor or friend.
  • Ask for photo identification from service or delivery people before letting them in. If you are the least bit worried, call the company to verify.
  • Be sure your street address number is large, clear of obstruction, and well-lighted so police and other emergency personnel can find your home quickly.
  • Consider a home alarm system that provides emergency monitoring for burglary, fire, and medical emergencies.
WATCH OUT FOR CON ARTISTS
  • Don't fall for anything that sounds too good to be true -- a free vacation, sweepstakes prizes, cures for cancer and arthritis, a low-risk, high-yield investment scheme.
  • Never give your credit card, phone card, Social Security, or bank account number to anyone over the phone. It's illegal for telemarketers to ask for these numbers to verify a prize or gift.
  • Don't let anyone rush you into signing anything -- an insurance policy, a sales agreement, a contract. Read it carefully and have someone you trust check it over.
  • Beware of individuals claiming to represent companies, consumer organizations, or government agencies that offer to recover lost money from fraudulent telemarketers for a fee.
  • If you're suspicious, check it out with the police, the Better Business Bureau, or your local consumer protection office. Call the National Consumers League Fraud Information Center at 800-876-7060.
At BikeNSafetyPromos, we are committed to providing safety in a small, yet effective way, for people in different types of situations.  We have two great products which help keep people safe, specifically those who tend to be vulnerable to crime.

Our BugEyez Safety Lights can be used as a guide to light the way when using a cane to walk at night, or even as a light to be clipped on to a wheelchair, to let people know you are coming through.  It can also be used inside of a purse, as a way to quickly find your keys when you need to get going.  You can also use the small, effective light to clip to your keys, so that you can find that keyhole without delay.

We also have an Electronic Panic Alarm that can be worn or carried, and will draw attention for help like nothing else.  It can be attached to your key chain, clipped on to your purse or belt loop, so that wherever you go, you will not be without help.

We would love to partner with you in reaching people of all ages to help provide safety through LED Safety Lights and Hand Held Alarms.
